Support Southwinds

Southwinds has long enjoyed the support of the community through gifts of many types.  Please show your generosity by clicking one (or both) of the buttons below.

Southwinds has been Challenged!! Will you help us?

The Centimark Foundation has challenged Southwinds, Inc. to raise half of the money ($16,500) needed for a second wheelchair accessible van for our aging and medically fragile individuals.  If we raise $16,500 they will match that money!!!

So far through the generosity of donors, we have raised over $14,000.  Will YOU help us raise the additional $600?

Here is our challenge to you – if 200 people that read this request would donate $3.00 we will have raised the additional $600 needed to meet the challenge set forth to us by the CentiMark Foundation!!

Today adults with developmental disabilities are living longer and are facing the same challenges as people age; therefore this van becomes a critical part of our long term goal to be able to provide the best overall life experience to those adults that we serve.  Southwinds, Inc. is their home but as an organization, is providing them a voice, a platform to get their message out into the world that their life, their future depends on the giving power of people in the community that believe in the extraordinary ability that exceptional individuals can achieve.  Help us to continue to break down the barriers and eliminate the isolation once faced by adults with developmental challenges because each of their lives is a constant reminder that no matter the disability, everyone deserves to live a happy and normal life.

In May of this year, because of the generosity of an anonymous donor and other supporters we were able to purchase our first wheelchair accessible van.  This van has opened up the world of possibilities to several of the wheelchair bound individuals that we serve such as David.  When he first saw the van his face said it all, a renewed expression of hope that the feelings of isolation have disappeared because he can once again enjoy what life has to offer him, such as going to the movies and attending a party without barriers.

You can make your donation on-line at www.southwindsinc.org by clicking the “Donate” button and selecting “Wheelchair Van Challenge” or mail it to Southwinds, Inc. 2101 Greentree Road, Suite 201A, Pittsburgh, PA 15220.

Sad News

Southwinds is sad to say that one of our long-time individuals, Deana Reid, passed away on February 12th.  Deana came to live at Southwinds in 1986, most recently she resided at the Lyndhurst house.  She was an employee of Achieva Regis Avenue Workshop, was a participant in Special Olympics and was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church.  We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Reid family.  She will be missed by all those that were apart of her Southwinds family.  If Deana touched your life, please consider making a Memorial Donation to Southwinds in her name.

Who is Southwinds?

Southwinds, Inc. is a non-profit agency which provides quality residential care and life skills training for adults with developmental challenges through out Allegheny County (Pennsylvania).  At the heart of Southwinds' mission is the belief that persons with developmental challenges deserve the same opportunities to lead normal lives as every other citizen. This includes such simple rights as personal and private space in which to live, a personal bedroom, transportation to and from work or recreation, and the opportunity to choose their recreational activities.  Independent living, with appropriate professional support, is our goal.

Our Mission: Southwinds' mission is to provide residences for developmentally challenged persons in the community, while enhancing their quality of life and offering opportunities for specialized programs, social involvement, and independence. Our focus continues to be breaking down the isolation and segregation experienced by the developmentally challenged, by providing them with extensive services that promote their independence, dignity and equality.  Read more about how Southwinds can improve the quality of life for individuals on our mission page.
