Who is Southwinds?

Southwinds, Inc. is a non-profit agency which provides quality residential care and life skills training for adults with developmental challenges through out Allegheny County (Pennsylvania).  At the heart of Southwinds' mission is the belief that persons with developmental challenges deserve the same opportunities to lead normal lives as every other citizen. This includes such simple rights as personal and private space in which to live, a personal bedroom, transportation to and from work or recreation, and the opportunity to choose their recreational activities.  Independent living, with appropriate professional support, is our goal.

Our Mission: Southwinds' mission is to provide residences for developmentally challenged persons in the community, while enhancing their quality of life and offering opportunities for specialized programs, social involvement, and independence. Our focus continues to be breaking down the isolation and segregation experienced by the developmentally challenged, by providing them with extensive services that promote their independence, dignity and equality.  Read more about how Southwinds can improve the quality of life for individuals on our mission page.

2010 Walk for a Healthy Community

THANK YOU!!

On Saturday, May 22, 2010 Southwinds and Highmark walked at Schenley Park, Flagstaff Hill in Pittsburgh for the annual Walk for a Healthy Community.  In between the rain drops, 95 walkers turned out to support the individuals served by Southwinds.  At 9 am just as the one mile fun walk was about to start, the blue skies came out allowing for about an hour rain free for our walkers!!

Because of your generosity we raised $17, 611.26!! The proceeds from the 2010 event will help us reach our goal of purchasing Emergency Preparedness Kits for all 14 of our houses.  The kits will cost approximately $1,000. Your donations will supply essential survival itesm such as emergency backpacks filled with first aid supplies, emergency weather radios, sleeping bags, extra blankets and pillows, extra snow shovels, disposal cell phones, canned good, bottled water and much more.

Four walls and a roof create a house but it is heart and soul that create A Place to Call Home. February 5, the blizzard of 2010! No one at Southwinds could have predicted the emergencies that would occur in the days following that powerful snow storm. Two of our houses lost electricity resulting in below 50 degree temperatures forcing both individuals and staff to shelter at some of our other houses. You have just enhanced our ability to be ready for when those unexpected moments happen. Our goal is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities that we serve.
